Have you ever heard that International Medical Graduates (IMGs) can’t secure spots in top programs and competitive specialties? Dr. Rhanderson Cardoso, a successful cardiologist at Harvard Medical School at the Brigham Women's Faulkner Hospital, is here to prove otherwise.
Dr. Cardoso, who hails from Brazil, shares his journey from medical school to working at one of the world's most renowned medical institutions. With over 10 years of experience in the field, he offers valuable insights and recommendations for IMGs seeking medical residency in the United States.
Dr. Cardoso's Match Journey:
Dr. Cardoso had always dreamed of practicing medicine in the US, and it all started with his discovery of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECMFG) program during his second year of medical school. Despite the fact that few people, especially Brazilians, were taking this route at the time, he went on to complete his medical education and apply for residency just after graduation.
During his application process, Dr. Cardoso made a few mistakes, such as not having any publications and applying to too few programs. However, he was eventually able to secure a spot at the University of Miami for his internal medicine residency, where he also served as a chief resident.
The Path to Success
Dr. Cardoso believes that hard work and persistence are key to success. During his residency, he made the most of his opportunities, participating in research and publishing systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This helped him to secure a fellowship at Johns Hopkins and eventually a faculty position at Harvard Medical School.
Despite the challenges he faced along the way, including financial barriers and language barriers, Dr. Cardoso never gave up. He stresses the importance of having a good story to tell, improving communication and interview skills, and being persistent in the face of setbacks.
Advice for Preparing for Step Exams
Dr. Cardoso also offers advice for those preparing for Step exams, such as blocking off dedicated study time, focusing on questions instead of cramming theory, and studying at the best time of day.
