Dr. Hina Cheema. (OBGYN who struggled to get into residency in 2009 but later achieved financial independence in 2019)
Today’s guest is a boss OBGYN from Pakistan who has achieved financial independence! She tells us why she did that but also shows us how the clinical experiences we culminate prior to applying for residency will likely increase our chances of matching into a competitive specialty.
She believes that IMG’s should not restrict themselves only to the most common “IMG friendly specialties”.
In her opinion, due to the limited number of IMGs applying into specialties labelled as “competitive” there is actually a high likelihood of matching into these as there are fewer applicants who meet IMG criteria.
Her wisdom and logic is one to hold on to! I was taking notes!
To top it off, she now practices medicine on her own terms, volunteering across the globe as she has achieved financial independence. THIS is exactly why I admire her. Because as an IMG she is showing all of us to think beyond just the residency position. To think about the career path as a whole and to redefine what practicing medicine means to us!
